Plants as pets

Have you felt the warmth while walking bare foot on dewy grass or the expansion while hugging a tree? Do you have plants at home? Have you tried talking to one? Plants may not show you love and loyalty or cuddle up like your pet but they certainly can feel, have emotions, intuition to a certain degree and can respond to all of this in their own way. Just like how they turn toward the sun or shed leaves in autumn.  Of course, we need science, experiments and other left brained data to prove all this. The best-selling book ‘The Secret Lives of Plants’ by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird has all the answers to the objective type questions. Both conducted all sort of experiments with plants such as playing music, talking to them, etc. Dr Bruce Lipton’s theory about the environment playing a vital role in the development of the personality maybe for humans but we are all living in interconnected energy and may fit with the plant kingdom as well.

Interestingly, trees communicate with each other with a network of slow pulsating electrical signals. Alarm and distress are the probable topic of communication. This knowledge shakes the mantra ‘Survival of the Fittest’. The question is ‘What can we be to survive stronger together?’

Paramhamsa Yogananda in his book ‘An Autobiography of a Yogi’ tells an inspirational story about Luther Burbank, whom he calls an American saint. A horticulturist, Burbank developed a spineless cactus with the persuasion of gently talking to it with love “You have nothing to fear. You don’t need your defensive thorns. I will protect you.”

With many plants as a family, my balcony is a green space. People hoard jewellery, I collect plants. Recently the soil was changed in the pots to add nutrients. Most of the plants held up fine but this particular Bougainville was not bouncing back. It just wasn’t showing any signs of recovery. That’s when I started talking firmly. Yes, I did have a good one on one chat with this pink sunken dry between two white hardy ones.

This guy was not one of the healthy ones, I realised. It needed some motivation and a lot of love. I played The Twin Hearts Meditation, the eternal reservoir of positivity and compassion.

The green foliage sprouted behind the dry branch, bringing hope and perseverance. Pink hue of joy added to the party.

Lookout for those emotionally malnourished friends around you. They need that talk, hug or kick. The light is always shining. Find it, follow it, radiate it.

Awesome this is so true… plants love to be talked to. Reading this brings back my childhood memories. I too used to talk and and everyone in my house would ask me who are you talking too ? Are you crazy… Guess we are Earth wizards.
